Why Your Plants Aren't Thriving Indoors (And How to Fix It)

You water them. You re-pot them. You talk to them. They still look miserable. Here's what's actually going wrong and what to do about it.

The Problem: Not Enough Light

This is the answer most of the time.

Light is food for plants. Without enough of it, they can't photosynthesise. They can't grow. They slowly decline. And because it happens gradually, most people don't connect the cause to the symptom.

Signs your plant isn't getting enough light:

  • Leggy, stretched growth reaching toward the window
  • Yellowing leaves
  • Slow or no new growth
  • Leaves smaller than they should be
  • Soil staying wet for too long after watering

If any of these sound familiar, light is likely the issue.

Why Indoor Light Isn't Enough

Even a bright room receives a fraction of the light intensity found outdoors. A sunny windowsill might deliver 50 - 150 PPFD lux on a good day. The same plant outside would receive 1,000 - 2,000 PPFD.

Most tropical houseplants evolved in environments with consistent, intense light year-round. Australian winters cut that down further. South-facing rooms cut it down more.

The Fix

Move your plants closer to natural light where possible. Clean your windows. Dirty glass blocks more light than you'd think.

And if that's not enough use a grow light.

ori delivers consistent, full-spectrum light at 15W. It's enough to make a real difference for one plant or a small collection. Stake it into the pot for a clean look, or use the metal base on a shelf. Set the timer using the built-in controller. 12–16 hours a day is enough for most tropical plants.

Then leave it. ori handles the rest.

What About Overwatering?

Overwatering is the second most common problem and it's usually caused by the first. Plants in low light don't use water efficiently. The soil stays wet. Roots sit in moisture. Root rot sets in.

Fix the light, and your watering problems often fix themselves.

Before you buy more fertiliser or a different potting mix, check the light first.

ori was designed for exactly this situation. One light, simple setup, real results.
